China has announced two new partnerships between Chinese and foreign universities – just months after the country’s Ministry of Education more than one-fifth of the country’s Sino-foreign higher education programs. The ministry has given the green light to two new joint endeavors between Chinese universities and institutions abroad, Beijing News. Chengdu University of Technology will partner with the UK’s Oxford Brookes University to create “Chengdu University of Technology Oxford Brookes College” and “Don College of Shandong Jiaotong University” will be a joint endeavor between Russia’s Don State Technical University and Shandong Jiaotong University in Jinan. The last time Chinese-foreign university partnerships made headlines was in July, when the Ministry of Education more than 200 Sino-foreign programs, five of which were jointly managed institutions in China. These new partnerships allow Chinese institutions to fully fold foreign resources into their own universities, rather than simply joining in on jointly-managed ventures with universities abroad. These new programs will take place fully on the Chinese universities’ campuses and will offer undergraduate courses in science.
The colleges will each take 960 students per year, the Ministry of Education said. Sources from the universities told Caixin that applicants will be required to pass the gaokao, China’s annual college entrance exams, before matriculation. Students who complete the courses will receive bachelor’s certificates from both the Chinese university and the foreign one, the sources said. Support independent journalism from China. Sydney has renamed its annual Chinese New Year Festival to “Lunar New Year Festival” to be more inclusive, The Australian reported. The city’s festival is the largest celebration of the holiday outside of Asia.
Members of non-Chinese communities in Sydney have called for the change for years. A 2015 petition that garnered 2,000 signatures stated that the original name unfairly chose “to promote the more dominant (culture) and assume that they are all the same,” The Australian reported. Sydney, with a population of around 5 million, is home to several large Asian communities that celebrate Lunar New Year. The 2016 population census showed that the greatest proportion of Sydneysiders not born in Australia were of Chinese mainland origin, at around 5%. But an additional 1.8% were born in Vietnam, and 1.1% in South Korea. The festival will begin Friday, and 1.3 million people are expected to attend its events, according to.
