Citrix Hypervisor, formerly XenServer, is powered by the Xen Project hypervisor. What’s new and what’s changed with the XenApp and XenDesktop 7.15 LTSR? While many of the Servicing Options benefits and value add remain the same with the 7.15 LTSR, there are some key updates associated with this release: • Citrix has announced a new versioning strategy for LTSR whereas each LTSR will receive its own version number (i.e. XenApp and XenDesktop 7.15 LTSR).
Previously an existing version (7.6 FP3) was designated as a LTSR and the LTSR title was appended to the product version (7.6 LTSR). • Citrix has modernized our for XenApp and XenDesktop to better align with our Servicing Options model, all customers should review the new and associated policy pages. • Citrix has introduce the ability to utilize LTSR Virtual Delivery Agents (VDAs) with Citrix Cloud and/or a Current Release management plane to simplify application compatibility and integrate the benefits of LTSR across all Citrix app and desktop deployment models. • Current Release customers are encouraged to adopt the LTSR as part of their standard upgrade cycle as it contains updates/fixes for their existing CR site. • Citrix has introduced Customer Success Services now that Subscription Advantage is officially End of Sales. Citrix requires customers to have active Customer Success Services to be eligible for the extended lifecycle and cumulative update benefits of LTSR.

Customers with Customer Success Services can opt to implement the Long Term Service Release of XenApp and XenDesktop or XenServer to receive 5 years of mainstream support and 5 years of extended support. In addition, by electing to implement a LTSR version, customers will receive fixes, known as a Cumulative Update.
A Cumulative Update typically includes only fixes for the LTSR components without introducing new features and functionality that might impact the environment. Cumulative Updates are not considered version upgrades since they are typically void of new features and functionality. Rather, Cumulative Updates are maintenance updates to an existing product version. By opting to deploy an LTSR version of XenApp/XenDesktop/XenServer, customers can take comfort in knowing that they have longer cycles between version upgrades with minimal environment changes, which then lowers the long term IT management costs associated with their XenApp/XenDesktop/XenServer deployments. What is the ideal customer environment for a Long Term Service Release?
A Long Term Service Release of XenApp/XenDesktop/XenServer is ideal for customers that typically follow a 3-5 year version upgrade cycle, must follow strict compliance testing and validation for any environment changes, and are seeking clear, predictable guidance on releases so that they can adopt them based on business needs and risk tolerance. Who is eligible for the benefits of a Long Term Service Release? Customers must have Customer Success Services for all their XenApp/XenDesktop/XenServer licenses to qualify for the 5 years of mainstream support and 5 years of extended support (separate purchase of extended support contract required).

Any new release of XenApp/XenDesktop/XenServer will be labeled a Current Release. Citrix is simply identifying the standard release process as a Current Release to help differentiate those releases from a Long Term Service Release.
Typically XenApp and XenDesktop features are first released to Citrix Cloud, then those features are bundled into more frequent Current Releases. Overtime, Current Releases are bundled into a proven LTSR. What is the ideal customer scenario for Current Release and Long Term Service Release environments? Citrix recommends that large enterprise customers have a combination of Current Release and Long Term Service Release environments. It is recommended that customers install the latest Current Release to thoroughly test new features and functionality based on their individual business objectives.
